The film's engaging storyline had me hooked from the get-go, seamlessly blending intense drama with moments of unexpected humor. What truly elevated the movie for me, however, were the performances by the cast. Each actor brought their character to life with such depth and authenticity, it was hard not to become emotionally invested in their fates. Ben Kingsley, in particular, delivered a stand...

Hit and run was already used in the Winter War, and Finland's terrain makes it really effective. I myself have been in the army in 1998/1999 and passed five times, but I can't comment on those other questions, you'd probably have to ask the defense forces in Finnish, and they probably wouldn't answer everything either. I think you have expert comments, and as a Finn, thank you for watching and commenting and bringing a really small-scale video about possible threats, mainly because we are awake here and the comet chain works professionally, etc. and we are part of NATO. Finland's terrain, the will to defend the country, a big reserve every time, etc. are the strength of the Finnish defense in my opinion. Nuclear weapons, well, that fallout would also hit Russia and Finland, after the Cold War, there are relatively large underground bomb shelters for nuclear weapons.

Regarding why the chief wasn't allowed to call his wife in Germany ( at the bar ). Resistance/ allied intelligence went to some effort to learn uboat deployment schedules. Don't want to encourage sailors to talk. Or maybe the German city was under blackout and they didn't want people on the phone with a lamp on while bombing raids are happening. Sometimes, switchboard operators were too busy for civilian calls. I know those reasons were cited for comm blackouts so it's probably one of those.

I read the book. I loved it. It is hard to compare the two as you can't put everything the book has into a film. Even a 3.5 hours long movie... The movie is brilliant and the book is brilliant in different way. If i am forced to choose, i would reluctantly go for the movie.

Concerning the burning crew members of the tanker, there should everybody know, that the regular rules of war would have demanded the u-boat to rescue the sailors, but the german high command dismissed this rule and gave out the command that no enemy crewmen should be rescued. This was pure inhumanity . . . I am right now thinking of the medeterainian sea today :(

There were two types of torpedos, both detonating at "contact". The first version detonated on contact with the hull of the targeted ship. The second version was equipped with an electromagnetic ingnition machanism, so the torpedo would get off underneath the hull of the targeted ship. The second version was very unreliable when it was introduced to the u-boats.

Many years ago I had a telephone call with Reinhard Hardegen, who was the commander of U-123. He told me that Buchheim realy was on board as a reporter. They called such people "Badegast". Hardegen also told me that he and other U-Boat Commanders were totally pissed off about the novel and the movie, because what Buchheim wrote in his novel and what we saw in the movie was not the truth he said. "So waren wir nicht. Die Kommandanten und ihre Mannschaften waren dizipliniert."

The voice of Twiki was Mel Blanc, the voice of all the Loony Tunes characters. Bugs Bunny. The voice of Dr Theopolis Eric Server. also did "The Bionic Woman" Doomsday Is Tomorrow season 2 episode 14 kind of like Hal in 2001. Great reaction this show was from my child hood was 13, started noticing girls, Wilma and Princess Ardala whew . It was campy fun, you remember season 2,? Totally changed it, Wilma was dumbed down. wanted to make it more like Star Trek, Gill didn't want to come back too season 2 was hoping it would be cancelled, he wasn't happy with the role. Wanted a more grown up role. Season 2 only had 14 episodes, Wish this show get the CGI treatment, can tell they where using stock footage from the movie.

Torpedoes exploded on contact. Later, a magnetic fuse was installed to sense the enemy ship and these ran deeper to explode right under the keel, breaking the target in half. Depth charges exploded at set depths. Later models had contact fuses. Diesel engines were loud and used on the surface to recharge the batteries. While submerged they used quiet electric motors. 20 knots max surfaced. 9 knots max submerged.

Lenin and Finland's independence After the Finnish parliament declared Finland unilaterally independent by a bourgeois majority on December 6, Lenin recognized Finland's independence on December 31, 1917. Different estimates have been put forward as to why Lenin accepted the independence of bourgeois Finland. The most obvious are the ideological reasons written in Lenin's party program, which also led to a number of other countries - including Estonia and Ukraine - gaining independence from Soviet Russia. Lenin has been shown to have hoped for a revolution to break out in Finland, which would bring Finland back into the Soviet-Russia connection. The request of Finland's SDP may also have influenced the matter. Lenin gave orders to deliver weapons "for the Finnish proletariat" on January 7, 1918 (10,000 rifles) and on January 17 (25,000 rifles) to the "Commissar of Finnish Railways". On January 30, 1918, in his closing speech to the All-Russian meeting of Soviets, Lenin declared that Finland was a peripheral power of revolutionary Russia and in a state union with it, on the way to the International. In Finland, the people's democrats emphasized Lenin's status as a recognition of independence. Ideologically, those on the other side have considered it a falsification of history. The recognition of Finland's independence was not an end in itself for Lenin, but was primarily a means to facilitate the realization of the socialist revolution in Finland. After the Second World War, the Finns, referring to the recognition, said that "Lenin gave Finland independence" so that his followers would not dare to "take it away".

Torpedos can explode both ways, by impact on a target or on proximity/time. Normally the torpedo gets fired right under the middle of the enemies ship and explodes underneath the hull. The detonation creates a huge gas ball. The ship loses its buoyancy in that particular area, cracks and sinks. This is an advantage against a torpedo which gets fired for an impact explosion, because these can possibly hit a nonessential area of the ship. The explosion would damage the ship but not sink it. Perfect example of our time was the "USS Cole" that was bombed by terrorists. They put a Bomb against the hull and blew it up. The explosion made a huge hole into the ship, but it didn't sink. The reason for this is because in active battles, where both opponents fire on each other, the commanding officer cannot calculate the time for detonation. He had to fire the torpedos and then get away to avoid the depth charges. But during raids on convoys the prefered the detonations on time, as the chances for sinking the ships were almost certain with this method

The more u-boats got built, the more u-boat technology stagnated. In the mean time Allied ASW technologies (eg radar, as Uboats spent most of their time surfaced) steadily advanced. ~1942, type VII U-boats had 14 torpedoswith ~ 5mi/8km range at top speed, detonated contact and/or magnetic fuses.

You should try to see the film by the same writer/director/actor called The Magician. It's from when he was a film student, and it introduces a much younger Ray Shoesmith, who works in Melbourne's underworld. The film is a mockumentary, shot by Ray's neighbour, a foreign film student. The students questions and comments about Ray's actions and choices are the real subject of the movie and in a big way, this series is exploring the same themes. The idea that violence has a place in society, and that we need these hard men with their dark morality to deal with the real monsters in the world is a great discussion, one well worth having. No character in Film or TV history has done so much to fuel that debate. Is it ever right to do wrong? I think it is.

No one ever comments about this, but maybe the most poignant scene in the entire movie to me is when “Phillip“ yells goodbye to the U-boat crew as they depart La Rochelle and wishes them good hunting telling them to “sink them all!” The long look he takes and his eyes say to me “I’ll probably never see any of these guys again”. The fact that he was coming down to say farewell (dressed in his full uniform out of respect for them) after being so thoroughly drunk and sick the night before says to me that he made a supreme effort to come down and see them for what he believed would likely be the last time. By the end of the war, any U-boat that made one or two patrols without being sunk, was considered extremely lucky. And yet the boats were never short of volunteers, such was the patriotism of the German people. My impression also was that Phillip was not a member of that particular U-boat crew but rather he was the captain of another boat. I believe he was the captain of the boat that they run into out in the Atlantic. As the captain exclaims “my God, Phillip, they’ve pushed you back out to see again“ . This underscores the fact that he was such an experienced captain that they would send him back out to his death rather than not use his expertise. Phillip remained drunk all the time as pointed out by the first officer because Phillip knew only too well the horrible fate he and all of his fellow u-boat men probably would suffer as long as they continued to go to sea in their “iron coffins“.
